4- H was today and students were introduced to the club and it's activities. the next 4-H meeting will be Sept 20th. Students who signed up to present should be ready with their posters on that date.
Math: We spent more time with long division. Students were reminded that the test is next Friday. There is an extra credit opportunity in math. Students can learn this rap and apply it to a problem, then they can demonstrate it in the morning from now until Sept.1st. Reading/Writing: We worked more on growth mindset. Often, especially with this new math, students become frustrated and hit a " wall". we talked about what this looks like and how can we overcome this wall when we reach it in learning. SS: Students began to present their documents. We are continuing to discuss the causes for the Civil War.

9/1 Unit 1 Math Test 8/30 Early Release Math: We focused more on long division. Students were also given a different strategy to multiply two digit by two digit numbers. This was to help them prepare for tomorrow where we will go onto bigger numbers in division.
Reading: We watched a video about the caused of the civil war and discussed the main conflicts that could have started it. Students were very insightful so much that we accidentally took up writing time. But I felt that it was worth it! :) Social Studies: Students are finishing up their documents to present to the class tomorrow Each group was given a document to evaluate that will help support reasons why the civil war started. Math: We had three rotations today:
1) Students worked with the teacher in small group and were introduced to long division. We will continue practicing throughout the week 2) Students did independent working with multiplying two digit by two digit numbers 3) Students completed their multiplication fish bowl Reading: We read the story, Henry's Freedom Box. Students where they to answer the prompt, " Would you go the same lengths Henry did if something you enjoyed was taken away from you?" Writing: In writing we began brainstorming for our narrative pieces for this quarter. Students were to think about the first time they did something, the last time they did something and a time where they realized something. Social Studies: We began evaluating documents for our buckets. Tomorrow we will all present our findings. Science: We are still working hard on our STEAM project! Students are putting in their all for this project! Be sure to check some out during open house! Math: Today, students were introduced to multiplying two digit number by two digit numbers. Most of the time was spent on white boards as I practiced the steps with them. Here are some videos below to review with students.
Reading: RI testing is now complete! If wish to know your child's score currently, please send me an email! Writing: we finished up out presentations for writing and they were all wonderful! Tomorrow we will finally begin working on Narrative writing for the remaining of the quarter. Science: Students are working on a project that will be a surprise for open house! :) Tomorrow will be our first class dojo Friday. Students will turn in their points for an opportunity to spend them if they wish. If they chose to buy a a toy or slime, they must take it home and it must stay at home. Math: We have started with the Powers of 10. Today students practiced with the powers of 10 and working with exponents.
Writing: Students continued to work on their 1 topic into 7 topics. We discussed the reason behind conferences with the teacher and why they are important to becoming a great writer. MI: Today students have completed their MI. Tomorrow they will record their scores in their data binder. If you wish to know your student's score and what it means, you are free to email me. ** Behavior: This is the 3rd week of 5th grade. Though I hate to be tough, I am having trouble with the excessive talking among the class and have warned the students that I will take away flexible seating if it continues to be a problem. Please, talk to your child about sitting next to people they know they can handle ( friends may not always be the best choice) Upcoming Dates:
*** RI and MI testing is next week!!!*** Pleasehave a discussion with your child that they must DO THEIR BEST when taking these tests! This is data for me and the school to see how we can help them. It will be ineffective for the student if I am re-teaching things they already know. 8/21- Solar eclipse- School extended to 3:00. ( Due to safety concerns, students will not be able to be outside during the eclipse) 8/22- Open house 5pm-7pm Tentative: 8/18- Powers of 10 quiz 8/25- Multiplying two and three digit numbers quiz Math: Today we focused more on Order of Operations and took our first quiz. I will use these results to plan future lessons. Reading/ Social studies: We complied our visions and missions for the class and created a class constitution of our rights in the classroom. It will be on display during open house! :) Writing: Students continued to work on their 1 topic into 7 topics discussion. For example, the topic "pie" can be a narrative such as, " The first time I ate pie" . This topic can also be turned into a research topic such as " When was the first pie ever made?" Students are working hard on their topics and finding how to change things to the appropriate format. We will continue with this for another week before we concentrate solely on narrative writing. Science: Today Students built their mountains using gram crackers and whipped cream. They were able to demonstrate how mountains formed and constructed an argument explaining why. Next week we will move onto destructive forces.
Math:
Today we worked hard again in learning the Order of Operations. We will have our first quiz tomorrow covering the order of operations.
